Neurodiversity +

A different lens. A deeper understanding. A wee bit more room to be you.

What Does Ao Therapy Mean by Neurodiversity+?

Neurodiversity describes the natural variation in how human brains develop, function and experience the world. The term neurodivergent is commonly used for people whose neurological development or functioning differs from dominant expectations, including autism, ADHD and other neurodevelopmental differences. There are different perspectives on where the boundaries of neurodivergence lie.

At Ao Therapy, we recognise that a diagnosis can be incredibly meaningful. It can bring validation, understanding and access to support. But a diagnosis is not the whole person.

For us, Neurodiversity+ is a lens.

Not rose-coloured glasses. Perhaps purple and green ones.

A way of looking at ourselves and the world with greater curiosity, compassion and understanding. Not to pretend everything is wonderful, or explain every difficulty through a diagnosis, but to begin seeing ourselves a little more clearly.

To discover how our brains work. How we learn, feel, think, connect, know and love.

To understand our nervous systems, recognise our needs, explore our strengths and difficulties, and begin making sense of experiences that might once have felt confusing or disconnected.

So, What's with the +?

The + represents the rest of our wonderfully complex human experience.

Our brains and bodies are connected, and we're increasingly learning about overlaps between neurodevelopmental differences and physical health experiences, including hypermobility, Ehlers–Danlos syndromes (EDS), dysautonomia, POTS, Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) chronic fatigue, hormonal changes, burnout and so much more.

But the + is about more than health.

It's about our relationships, attachment experiences, culture, environments and the systems we live within. Our connection with nature, creativity, art, music, play, community, purpose and belonging.

Informed by an ecobiopsychosocial perspective, creative arts psychotherapy and relational practice, we recognise that understanding ourselves means looking at the whole picture, not just the parts that fit neatly into diagnostic boxes.

We don't assume that everything is connected. And we don't assume that it isn't.

We make room for curiosity and compassionate inquiry.

Understanding, Acceptance and Becoming

Our work isn't about making people more neurotypical or teaching them to hide the parts of themselves that don't fit.

It's about creating opportunities to understand who we are, recognise what we need and develop ways of caring for ourselves that honour our individual experiences.

With understanding can come acceptance. With acceptance, greater self-trust. And with appropriate support, scaffolding, opportunities to develop regulation, explore difficult experiences through a multi-modal approach, process trauma at a safe and individual pace, establish boundaries and build meaningful connections.

Creative Arts, Somatic, Narrative, and eco psychotherapies can be part of your journey, offering space for curiosity, connection, imagination, expression, exploration and discovering parts of ourselves that words alone might not reach.

There is no single pathway, and no expectation that everyone will experience this process in the same way.

Sometimes we need practical tools. Sometimes we need rest, connection, medical support or a different environment. And sometimes we need someone to sit alongside us, remain curious and reflect back the qualities and possibilities we've struggled to recognise in ourselves.

That inner magic was never something we needed to create for you. Sometimes it simply needs the space, safety and relationship to be seen.

Neurodiversity+ is our invitation to look beyond the diagnosis, without overlooking the person.

No room for assumptions. Only curiosity and compassionate inquiry.
